SENSEO not heating: slow flashing light and the safe checks to make

A slow flash means the machine is heating. Philips advises support if it continues beyond 90 seconds. Rapid flashing is a different water-tank or float problem and is covered by the no-flow guide.

Before you start

  • Confirm the exact SENSEO model and observe whether the light is slow or rapid.
  • If the light is flashing rapidly, place the machine in a room above 10°C and let it reach room temperature.

Checks to run in order

Original HD78xx · Original Plus CSA210

  1. 01

    Time the heating phase

Switch the machine on once and wait without pressing a coffee button. A slow flash is normal only while heating; note whether it passes 90 seconds.

After this stepThe light becomes steady within 90 seconds.
  2. 02

    Separate a rapid-flash problem

If the light is rapid, fill above MIN, reseat and clean the tank, then gently shake the empty tank to free its float. Use the SENSEO no-flow guide for the complete sequence.

After this stepA rapid water-level alert clears; otherwise the slow-heating diagnosis remains separate.
  3. 03

    Stop after one timed test

If slow flashing still exceeds 90 seconds after the machine has warmed to room temperature, switch it off and contact Philips. There is no safe internal heating repair for the user.

After this stepThe machine either reaches ready state or is safely left off for service.

FAQ · SENSEO Original / Original Plus

Is a rapidly flashing SENSEO failing to heat?

Usually no. Philips links rapid flashing to the water level, tank seating, a stuck float, a dirty tank or a room below 10°C. Slow flashing beyond 90 seconds is the heating alert.

Will descaling fix a SENSEO that never heats?

Do not start an improvised descale as a heating repair. If slow flashing exceeds 90 seconds, Philips directs the user to support.
