SENSEO coffee not flowing: tank, pod holder and descaling checks
SENSEO uses soft pods, not capsules. Low flow often starts with the water-level float, a blocked pod-holder sieve, poor pod placement or scale. Check these points before suspecting the pump.
Before you start
- ✓Confirm the exact HD or CSA reference.
- ✓Unplug before cleaning removable parts.
- ✓Use only a centred, intact SENSEO-style soft pod.

Seat the tank and free the float
Fill and refit the tank. If the light flashes rapidly, empty it, shake it gently and wash the float area with hot water and washing-up liquid, then rinse thoroughly.
✓ After this stepThe water-level light changes to its normal heating state. - 02
Clean the pod-holder sieve and spout
With the machine unplugged and cool, brush the small sieve in the pod holder and clean the removable coffee spout. Do not put loose ground coffee or a torn pod in the holder.
✓ After this stepThe sieve holes are visible and the pod lies centred, convex side down. - 03
Run the exact flush or descale program
For first use, run the boiler-fill flush in the exact manual. If flow remains weak or CALC is on, choose the model-specific descale sequence: Original Plus, Select, Switch and Twist use different cycle counts.
✓ After this stepThe full procedure and all rinse cycles finish; CALC then clears.

FAQ · SENSEO Original / Original Plus
Does SENSEO use capsules?
No. Standard SENSEO machines use soft coffee pods. A generic capsule or loose ground coffee can obstruct the holder and must not be presented as compatible.
Why does the CALC light stay on?
Philips says the light clears only after the complete model-specific procedure. If interrupted, repeat the whole sequence with every rinse.
