Breville / Sage · No or low pressure

Breville / Sage Barista Express no pressure: grind, dose and flow checks

Low pressure is usually a puck-preparation problem—coarse grind, low dose or old beans—unless water flow is also missing. A cleaning-disc test can distinguish the gauge from the coffee recipe when the exact manual includes it.

Before you start

  • Use the correct one- or two-cup basket and fresh beans roasted within about four weeks.
  • Allow the group and portafilter to cool before cleaning; metal parts can be very hot.

Checks to run in order

  1. 01

Check water flow before the coffee recipe

Fill and fully seat the tank, remove coffee and run the manual’s water-flow check. If no water runs, clean the filter openings and follow the exact descaling procedure before continuing.

After this stepWater flows normally without coffee.
  2. 02

    Correct grind, dose and tamp

If water flow is normal, use a finer espresso grind, the correct basket dose and an even firm tamp. Fresh beans and the supplied Razor dose tool help rule out an under-filled basket.

After this stepExtraction slows and the gauge moves into its normal espresso range.
  3. 03

Verify the gauge with the supplied cleaning disc

Only if your exact manual supplies this test: put the rubber cleaning disc in the one-cup basket with no coffee, lock the portafilter and run one shot. A moving needle shows that the gauge works. Stop after this single test and beware of hot water and pressure.

After this stepThe gauge responds during the documented disc test, or the machine is left for service.

FAQ · Breville / Sage Barista Express

Does low pressure always mean a broken pump?

No. With normal water flow, the manual first points to too little coffee, coarse grind, weak tamp or old beans. Test the recipe before assuming a pump fault.

Can I run the pressure test with coffee in the basket?

The manual’s gauge check uses the supplied rubber cleaning disc in the one-cup basket with no coffee. Follow only the procedure supplied with your exact revision.
